Side Plank Thread the Needle for Kart Racing Drivers | Rotational Control and Lateral Core Strength

Cornering forces challenge your ability to control rotation while maintaining lateral stability. If your trunk cannot manage rotation under load, stress shifts to your lumbar spine and steering consistency suffers.

In this video, we break down the side plank with thread the needle — a movement that builds rotational control and oblique endurance for motorsport athletes.

How to perform it:

Start in a side plank position

Stack your shoulders and hips

Extend your top arm toward the ceiling

Slowly thread that top arm underneath your torso

Rotate through your upper back

Return the arm to the ceiling with control

Key focus points:

Keep hips lifted and stable

Rotate through the thoracic spine, not by collapsing the lower back

Move slowly and deliberately

Maintain steady breathing

Keep ribs stacked over pelvis

Modifications:

Drop to your forearm if balancing on your hand is too difficult

Perform from your knees instead of your feet to shorten the lever

Focus on controlled range before increasing difficulty

Why this matters for drivers:

During racing, your body must resist lateral collapse while controlling rotational forces. This movement strengthens the obliques and deep trunk stabilizers while improving rotational awareness and upper back mobility.

This exercise develops:

Anti-rotation strength

Lateral core endurance

Thoracic mobility

Shoulder stability

Control under sustained load

Recommended training:

2–3 sets

6–10 controlled reps per side

Slow tempo

If you want better trunk control, improved rotational stability, and stronger endurance through corners, this drill belongs in your training progression.
