Strong rear shoulders and upper back muscles are essential for maintaining posture and
steering precision during long race sessions. When these muscles fatigue, the shoulders round forward, the neck compensates, and control becomes less consistent.
In this video, we break down the standing reverse fly — a foundational movement for building rear deltoid strength and scapular stability in motorsport athletes.
How to perform it:
Stand tall with a slight bend in your knees
Hinge slightly at the hips while keeping your spine neutral
Hold dumbbells or a resistance band
Raise your arms out to the sides in a wide arc
Keep a soft bend in your elbows
Lower with control
Key focus points:
Move through the shoulders, not the lower back
Avoid shrugging your shoulders
Squeeze your shoulder blades gently together
Do not swing or use momentum
Control the eccentric phase
Why this matters for drivers:
The reverse fly strengthens the rear deltoids, rhomboids, and mid-trapezius — muscles that stabilize the shoulder joint during steering and help resist forward collapse under fatigue. Strong posterior shoulders improve durability, reduce neck strain, and support consistent performance late in the race.
