Side Plank Leg Lift for Kart Racing Drivers | Lateral Stability and Hip Strength

In kart racing, lateral force is constant. Your body must resist side bending while maintaining control through your hips and trunk. When lateral stability breaks down, force shifts into the lumbar spine and steering precision declines.

In this video, we break down the side plank leg lift — a progression that builds lateral core strength and hip stability for motorsport athletes.

How to perform it:

Set up in a side plank position

Elbow directly under shoulder

Body in a straight line

Lift the top leg slowly

Lower it with control

Maintain steady breathing

If full side plank is too difficult:

Bend both knees and perform from a modified position

Keep hips lifted and stacked

Key focus points:

Do not let your hips sag

Keep ribs stacked over pelvis

Avoid rotating forward or backward

Lift the leg from the hip, not by swinging

Maintain tension through the obliques

Why this matters for drivers:

Cornering forces challenge lateral trunk control and hip stability. The side plank leg lift strengthens the glute medius and obliques — key muscles that help resist lateral collapse and maintain body control under sustained G-forces.

This exercise develops:

Lateral core endurance

Hip stability

Pelvic control

Anti-lateral flexion strength

Durability during long race sessions

Recommended training:

3 sets

8–12 controlled reps per side

Or 20–30 second holds with controlled leg lifts

If you want stronger hips, improved lateral stability, and better control through corners, this movement should be part of your training progression.
